Give me a Mac Car
GM And Bill Gates
At a recent computer expo ( COMDEX ) , Bill Gates reportedly compared he computer industry with the auto industry and stated "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 mi/gal."

Recently General Motors addressed this comment by releasing this statement "Yes, but would you want your car to crash twice a day?"
1. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.
2. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
3. Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine. For some strange reason, you would accept this too.
4. You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT". But, then you would have to buy more seats.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast, twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.
6. The Macintosh car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to theircars, which would make their cars run much slower.
7. The oil, gas and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.
8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
9. The airbag system would say "are you sure?" before going off.
10. If you were involved in a crash, you would have no idea what happened.

The big money is not made by us - ie little guys in the market. The Dow could hit 15,000 in five years-yes-but that' just over 10% a year. Big sh**t!
It aint going to make you or me rich.

Now lets start a high tech gizmo company and sell $20,000,000 worth of stock and watch the market frenzy drive it up 10 fold and now your talking.

Or better still lets starta gold company, keep producing, sell at any price, and never pay our shareholders a dividend- sounds good to me.

223-ALL-About SSC and many other despicable things.
I currently hold 20,000 shares of SSC. Since I acquired them I'm going to let it ride. I do'nt want to sell and then kick myself, because I believe we're in for a long move this time. ( beside, I'm sitting pretty now. I got in at $0.75 ) There is a correction in silver now, which is normal. $6.50/oz is still a good run up from $5.00+/-. Better than gold has shown. Not many here want to believe gold is a controlled commodity as i've posted before. Until the baby boomers stop inserting $18 bil +/- /mo into equities, interest rates rise substantially, the dollar is currency of choice, we're all whistling dixie! ( also the propaganda mills stop asserting everything is hunky dory )

REMEMBER, THE NAME OF THE GAME IS MAKE "MONEY!!!! NOT HIT YOUR HEAD AGAINST A BRICK WALL. I'VE DUMPED MY GOLD HOLDINGS UNTIL I SEE A REAL TURNAROUND. I BELIEVE THERE IS STILL A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY OF SEVERAL MONTHS TO STILL GET IN GOLD AFTER THE TURN, ALBEIT AT A HIGHER PRICE, TO MAKE GAINS.

The type of trading I told you about is not that hard to understand. The main criteria is to find something that has a low downside risk and moves in a narrow range. After all, when an equity such as SSC is $1.00/share or lower, unless they go into bankruptcy ( which they did for a short period ) , on a big block you can trade for small percentage gains using techs that I mentioned and your winning trades usually offset any losing trades by 3/1 or better.

When we have crisises such as Asia, Clinton, threat of war, and gold does'nt move, you know ( or should know ) the game is rigged, for now.

GREED KILLS
No one here can honestly tell me they
know what will happen and what will
be. It's impossible. P.M.'s have their
place. But you are not going to tell
me that one should have more than 10%
of ones wealth in the stuff. Some here
believe they will make a killing investing
most of their wealth in P.M.'s. It is not
going to be that easy. You will find out
the hard way and later pay the piper.
One will get lucky, but most of you will
fail at it. It's your life, do with as you please.
And pay the piper when your finished gambling.
Isn't that how it always is. Very few ever sneek

Asian deflation masking inflation
If Asian prices dropped due to currency devaluations, and Greenspan has not tightened to stave off inflation from high employment think about this:

Obviously this is a strategy which puts American corporations margins and profit at risk, undercutting future purchasing power. i.e. we offset rising wages with cheaper consumer goods so therefore American costs rise while import prices cannot be beat

My point though is that a decrease in import prices is a one time gain whereas wage/price inflation is a continuous spiral. If employment stays as high as it is, Greenspan must tighten credit and slow down the economy regardless of current aggregate inflation numbers. Otherwise his strategy is very short term.

There is already alot of newly minted greenbacks sloshing around in the world now and we only need wait until they find their way home for instant inflation. The fed is poised to soak all that money back up by re-issuing all the Asian bonds they are paying cash for now when the tightening is to begin.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
------------------
One day, Pete complained to his friend Woody, "Man! My elbow really hurts.
I guess I should go see a doctor." Woody said, "Don't do that! "There's a
computer at the corner drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and
cheaper than a doctor. Simply put in a sample of your urine and the
computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it
and it only cost 10 bucks."

Pete figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with his urine
sample and deposited the $10.00. The computer started making some noise and
various lights started to flashing. After a brief pause, out popped a small
slip of paper which read:

YOU HAVE TENNIS ELBOW.
SOAK YOUR ARM IN WARM WATER.
AVOID HEAVY LABOR.
IT WILL BE BETTER IN TWO WEEKS.

That evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it
would change medical science forever, Pete began to wonder if this computer
could be fooled. He decided to give it a try. He mixed together some tap
water, a stool sample from his dog, urine samples from his wife and
daughter. To top it off, he masturbated into the concoction.

He went back to the drug store, located the computer. Giggling like a giddy
teenager, he poured in the sample and deposited 10 bucks. The machine again
made the usual noises and printed out the following
anaylsis:

-YOUR TAP WATER IS TOO HARD.
GET A WATER SOFTENER.
-YOUR DOG HAS RINGWORMS.
BATHE HIM WITH ANTI-FUNGAL SHAMPOO.
-YOUR DAUGHTER IS USING COCAINE.
PUT HER IN A REHABILITATION CLINIC.
-YOUR WIFE IS PREGNANT WITH TWIN GIRLS. THEY AREN'T YOURS.
GET A LAWYER.
-AND IF YOU DON'T STOP JERKING OFF,
YOUR TENNIS ELBOW WILL NEVER GET BETTER.

GM's Saturn workers to hold referrendum on contract

SPRING HILL, Tenn. ( Reuters ) - Union workers at General Motors Corp.'s Saturn small car unit voted overwhelmingly Monday night to hold a referendum next month on whether to scrap their unique Japanese-style labor contract.

Of the 1,300 members of UAW Local 1853 who attended special meetings Monday, 86 percent voted in favor of holding the referendum, according to a spokesman for the union.

Many workers also are unhappy with rules governing seniority and shift assignments. The plant operates two 10-hour shifts per day, six days a week, staffed by three rotating work crews.

In point of fact, I'm in a similar situation as far as an overly large percentage of assets allocated to PMs. But I claim exception to Heavy Hitter's 10% rule of thumb on the basis of a very convoluted logic. you see, I have a satisfactory income in a job I hate, so I have spent the last 15 years learning metal working skills as a hobby, making silversmithing tools etc.

My artwork is salable now, but I'm still working my day job so concentrate instead on technique and building a portfolio of designs instead. But, being the eternal pessemist, I am afraid that metals prices will go up in the future so have been accumulating both stock and stocks ( pun ) as a hedge. To me it doesn't matter if metals go down, for the markup is huge. If the market falls to a nickel a pound I could cast bricks to use for monegrammed paving stones and turn a profit. But when I finally give up my day job the only way I will be able to survive doing what I like to do in the case that metals prices go up sharply is to have the hedge in already.

Tech Stocks Soar, Catapulting Nasdaq to New
High

By SHARON R. KING

EW YORK -- Technology stocks soared on Monday as investors brushed aside
concerns about the impact of Asia's economic woes on American corporate
profits, catapulting the Nasdaq composite index to a new closing high.

The technology-laden index rose 23.62 points to 1,751.75, eclipsing its old high of
1,745.85 reached on Oct. 9 by 5.9 points. Other indexes were mixed, however, with the
Dow Jones industrial average down 3.74 points to 8,410.20 but the broader Standard &
Poor's 500 up 3.93 points to 1,038.14.

Many analysts viewed the Nasdaq gains as a positive sign for the overall market, paving
the way for the 1998 rally to continue.

"It tells you that maybe not right away, but in time, the United States economy is going
to recover from this Asian-induced soft landing," said Hugh Johnson, chief investment
officer at First Albany.

Eugene Peroni Jr., director of technical research at Janney Montgomery Scott, said the
Nasdaq's ability to hit a new high on the heels of a string of records by both the Dow and
the S&P "might introduce further buying and renewed investor confidence.

"Its stronger performance helps to fortify the advance that's already taken place," he said.

Several of the stocks that led the Nasdaq higher on Monday -- like Microsoft, Intel and
Dell Computer -- have recouped all of the losses sustained during the fourth quarter,
when technology shares fell amid concerns that the economic turmoil in Asia would hurt
their profits.

After falling 2.31 percent in the fourth quarter, Microsoft is up 24.9 percent so far this
year; Intel is up 34.3 percent, after slipping 23.9 percent; and Dell has risen 54.9 percent,
after a 13.3 percent fall.

However, Oracle, which fell 38.7 percent in the fourth quarter, has regained less than
half of that loss, rising 18.2 percent this year. Also, Applied Materials, another of the
index's worst performers at the end of 1997, falling 36.8 percent in the fourth quarter,
has recouped only a portion of that loss, rising 24.1 percent this year.

Over all, the Nasdaq, which fell 7.35 percent in the fourth quarter, is up 11.6 percent this
year.

Microsoft gained ground on Monday on investor enthusiasm for the company's
two-for-one stock split. In moving higher, the company edged closer to becoming only
the second company to have a market capitalization of more than $200 billion. Now,
General Electric holds that distinction, with a value of $254 billion.

Even as the Nasdaq caught up with the other major indexes by reaching a record high,
those market gauges were mixed. The Dow was dragged down by oil company shares
such as Chevron and Exxon. Investors retreated from oil stocks on expectations that an
agreement between the United Nations and Iraq over weapons inspections would ease
concerns of oil supply shortages stemming from conflict in the Persian Gulf.

Countering the slide in oil shares was a 6 point gain by Merck, which rose 4.6 percent,
to 130 5/8, on news that the Food and Drug Administration had approved the sale of a
new product, the first once-a-day pill for the prevention and treatment of asthma.

Despite the strong gains in the Nasdaq, trading was muted, as investors limited their
activity ahead of congressional testimony of the Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan
Greenspan, which begins on Tuesday.

Analysts were divided on whether the Nasdaq's run can continue.

The recent gains have been concentrated in the larger companies that make up the index,
they point out, with smaller companies' stocks continuing to be sluggish.

If smaller company shares were to begin performing better than large capitalization
issues, Peroni said: "I would be a little bit more concerned" that investors were willing to
take on more risk, raising the possibility of a selloff.

But Thomas Galvin, chief equity strategist at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, said he believed
that the recent gains already left technology shares poised for a slide.

"We've had this Asia relief rally because technology got the most banged up in the fourth
quarter, but I would tend to believe that technology has got to take a break," Galvin said.
"I think the consensus view is that Asia is behind us."

But as the economies and businesses in those countries struggle to regain their financial
footing, American companies may yet feel some reverberations later in the year, he said.

Sticking my foot in my mouth till it jams at the knee. I view metal holdings in four ways. The first two in any order are as a foundation of financial security, a core insurance; and to purchase rare coins as both enjoyment and to add to the core policy.

The second two are purchases of mining shares and bullion as investments I see as becoming more and more likely to rise. I see natural resource stocks as the monsters of the future as Asia, India and other parts of the world start building and building, etc in the years to come.

The above paragraph has potential from the standpoint of monetary problems I see everywhere in the world and as long term plays that I will just hold for a few years.

There are some tremendous opportunities out there like IPJ, CFB, FSR, MAN, TNX, OROP, METLF, AZC, and many others, but in my opinion, mostly from reading people I trust in various newsletters, there is more than just gold in the ground.

I do see silver and gold popping, no question.

And finally as my knee gets closer to jaming on my teeth, I am not looking for moonshots or to just make a killing as it were. I am certain that some of the stocks I own will fly, and fly high. But my concerns mainly circle around my being able to maintain my meager lifestyle in perpetuity until I pass into the abyss, if I make a few bucks extra on the high flyers, that just allows me to fund my emotions enabling me to provide loved ones and friends with that stuff they just GOTTA HAVE.

Oh, and of course, to be able to show up with a bottle of tequila.

News from the deep diggings: The Constitution was a sell out. In the definitive treaty of 1783 ( find a copy outside of England if you can ) , the negotiators for our side agreed to a debt in silver and gold to the Crown. Sam Huntington was President. ( Ever hear of him before ? ) Now look in the Constitution for the word debt. And 2 + 2 = Are we still paying taxes to the Crown ? Did we win the War of Indpendence like all the books and school teachers say ?
And, there is more.

223 & Drooy
223,

I see two ways to determine a bottom on this pullback. First, the gap on the daily chart would be closed if DROOY reaches $2.00. I imagine that will provide some support and the price won't go much below that. Hopefully, it will turn without filling the gap as "the larger the unfilled gap, the farther the price will run in the other direction," as a rule.

Second, you could look at it as if we're in the last downleg of a three-step correction. If so, then the price should fall below the first correction bottom of $2.12. It could drop below $2.00, but I wouldn't count on it.

J.P. Morgan to cut 700 jobs

2/24/98 -- 12:01 AM

Report: J.P. Morgan to cut 700 jobs

NEW YORK ( AP ) - Faced with surging costs and losses in Asia, J.P. Morgan & Co. is planning to eliminate about 700 jobs, or nearly 5 percent of the bank's work force, the Dow Jones News Service reported Monday night.

In doing so, Morgan would become the third major U.S. bank to launch major job
cutbacks in recent months, following similar announcements from Chase Manhattan Corp., the nation's largest bank, and No. 2 Citicorp.

Morgan, the fourth largest U.S. bank, has been trying for years to transform itself from an old-fashioned lender to a major securities firm. But Morgan's surging costs and slow profit growth has kept its stock price from rising along with the rest of the bull market on Wall Street. Its stock rose just 3 percent last year, compared with the 14 percent average gain of major banks.

Last month, Morgan said its fourth-quarter earnings sank 35 percent, in part because of the Asian currency crisis.

Morgan's chairman and chief executive, Douglas A. ``Sandy'' Warner, wrote a candid memo to company employees saying that the company was considering other options to its current business strategy, including a merger with another institution, Dow Jones reported.

``Our stock is lagging our competitors', and some observers have questioned the viability of our strategy,'' Dow Jones quoted the Warner memo as saying. ``Stronger financial results must be a priority.''

Ted@Your neighbors in CB have nothing on these geniuses
True story e-mailed to me by my wife's cousin in Manitoba.

From a radio program, a true report of a happening in Gilbert Plains,
Manitoba

A guy buys brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee for $30,000 and has
$400+
monthly payments. He and a friend go duck hunting and of course
all
the lakes are frozen.

These two Atomic Brains go to the lake with the guns, the dog, the
beer and of course the new vehicle. They drive out onto the lake
ice
and get ready. Now, they want to make some kind of a natural
landing
area for the ducks, something for the decoys to float on. In order
to
make a hole large enough to look like something a wandering duck
would fly down and land on, it is going to take a little more effort
than an ice hole drill.

Out of the back of the new Grand Cherokee comes a stick of
dynamite
with a short, 40-second fuse. Now these two Rocket Scientists do
take
into consideration that if they place the stick of dynamite on the
ice at a location far from where they are standing ( and the new
Grand
Cherokee ) , they take the risk of slipping on the ice when they run
from the burning fuse and possibly go up in smoke with the
resulting
blast. So, they decide to light this 40-second fuse and throw the
dynamite.

Remember a couple of paragraphs back when I mentioned the
vehicle,
the beer, the guns and the dog? Yes, the dog: A highly trained
Black
Lab used for retrieving, especially things thrown by the owner.

You guessed it, the dog takes off at a high rate of doggy speed on
the
ice and captures the stick of dynamite with the burning 40-second
fuse
about the time it hits the ice. The two men yell, scream, wave arms
and wonder what to do now. The dog, cheered on, keeps coming.
One of
the guys grabs the shotgun and shoots the dog. The shotgun is
loaded
with #8 shot, hardly big enough to stop a Black Lab. The dog stops

for a moment, slightly confused but continues on. Another shot
and
this time the dog, still standing, becomes really confused and of
course scared, thinking these two Nobel Prize winners have gone
insane. He takes off to find cover, ( with the now really short fuse

burning on the stick of dynamite ) .... Under the brand new
Cherokee.
BOOM! Dog and Cherokee are blown to bits and sink to the bottom
of
the lake in a very large hole, leaving the two candidates for
Co-leaders of the Known Universe standing there with this "I
can't
believe this happened" look on their faces.

The insurance company says that sinking a vehicle in a lake by
illegal
use of explosives is not covered. He had yet to make the first of
those $400+ a month payments.

Conspire me no conspiracies...deal with the facts...
Why's he talking about 7000 tonnes of gold on a gold forum?? throw him off...

Thanks for the many thoughts on this 7000 tonnes. The first question I will address, was my first question in my original post
http://www.kitcomm.com/comments/gold/1998q1/1998_02/980221.063252.auratoree.htm

Is this a hoax?

These are some of the reasons I believe this is not a hoax, at least not in the way that has been suggested by the gainsayers here:

1. The advert was placed on 11 February, as far as I know, noone at kitco spotted it before my post of 21 Feb. It had been posted for 10 days before then. OK, I look like a sucker from 50 metres, but why did this little tidbit only come to light serendipitously because of a wierd search I went on some days ago?....

2 A hoax requires publicity, the hoaxers want their hoax to be known, thats the idea of a hoax, you know-- fool people. The more the better.

Perhaps RJ, or Barb Hughes or someone in the know could tell me if they scan the pages of http://www.tradenet.org/cur10.html looking for deals? I mean, is it a trade rag? If it is, how come theres been no news at all?

I was actually chasing up the price of antique dinars in an auction in Hong Kong and I fell across a currency auction of dinars last year. So I scanned the tradenet pages this is not an unusual place to bid /ask or swap large quantities of currency, coin, bullion, diamonds, what have you. There are several bids for gold by the 100s of kilos, and by the tonne, even by the hundred tonne lot. In the realm of this www page this is an unusual but perhaps not an extraordinary advertisement. Have a look!

If this is a hoax there seems to be a determined lack of commitment on the part of the hoaxers to promote their little scam. A hoax, if it is to be perpetrated on the public ought to be publicised. No?

Or perhaps this was a scam to be played on only a select group rather than the world at large.......

3. The language of this hoax is obtuse legalese.
Look how easy it was for a couple of non-entities supposedly in the Swiss CB to announce a sale of 1400 tonnes of Swiss gold last year in Reuters, in the papers. In no time there were dozens of posters at kitco falling over themselves to post the news and their interpretations of the the news. Why would anyone go to this trouble for a simple hoax? Note the sanitised distancing language which, correct me if Im wrong, means a double-blind so the placing broker does not know the seller. The placer of the ad has nothing to gain by misquoting say 700 instead of 7000, indeed this quantity is repeated, there is no mistake..
Compare the very very careful language of this ad to other ads in the same place, this one is, ahhhemm, very circumspect yet beguilingly revealing...

4 If its a hoax, its not fooling anyone ( except me ) . I thought the point of a hoax was to be believable?

Sure, it could still be a hoax. I have been know to be wrong. Really! Its true! Although sometimes I cant believe it either.

Lets just say, for the sake of my finger exercise, that it is not a hoax, this megadvertisement for 7000 tonnes of gold So----What is it?

More THOUGHTS to upchuck soon----

Some pile of gold under my sheep shed, eh?
Let's just suspend judgement on the hoax question for a moment, and I'm looking at the next two questions I raised then...

Is this a Sale or a Lease/leaseback contract?

Let us suppose that the contract is a straight sale of gold.

There are only two countries that have that much declared gold, the USA and Russia. No other CB is close. Therefore, if this is a straight sale of gold metal it can only be sold by USA or Russia. Well I think the American people may have something to say about the former, what about the latter?

A quick check through me eidetic memory :

****
kiwi ( Consider this...comments welcome ) ID#194311:

Head banker from Russia just declares Russia has suffered US$3.5 billion in gold losses in the past two weeks. They are only buying gold so the only reason I can imagine they "lost" on gold is because the price dropped, I'm sure they wouldn't announce their trading losses...so...
Is he really giving a thinly vieled threat to the world bankers that Russia's gold reserves are of the order of US$88 billion worth. This is accounting for the $12 drop in gold since 19 Nov....two weeks ago. A US$3.5 billion loss for a US$12 drop means they have around US$88 billion worth. Now this would really change the equation right...how much gold is that anyway?

***

Date: Wed Dec 03 1997 15:44
Allen ( USA ) ( Kiwi ) ID#246224: Correction that's 8975 tonnes.

****

So, if this is a real sale, perhaps its the Russians they have a reason to liquidate gold if anyone has. Perhaps its not the Russsians..

OK, lets say it aint the Russians. Could it be the US of A? Cant anybody just kinda ask to see the Gold in the Fed Reserve or Fort Knix? Why cant someone say, HEY! wheretheheckisit? Wheres the Gold?

OK, lets say its neither the Russians, nor the Americans so, perhaps, if the LBMA is trading 1300 tons a day, I mean, 7000 tons is only, One good 5 day week and Monday morning to get this kinda hole. Theres an interesting question, How much space does 7000 tons of gold occupy? Anyone? I could probably stick it in one of my haybarns?

That represents one heck of a long position of gold to liquidate. Hey, Im a gold bug, cant imagine breaking my wrist on a 400 oz bar, but to be that long on gold and to want to sell now, uh uh...

So, lets just say it aint a sale. ( OK Im wrong again )

Lets see if its a lease deal.

Knowing my limitations ( well I have enough of them ) Im going to invite someone D.A? S.A.S? elf? who knows how these leases work in practice, rather than the ( imperfect ) theory I have to expand and criticise here please. But, to me this offer looks like a typical lease arrangement, or perhaps a lease and sell-back. The Sale and lease back to the seller gives ownership to the purchaser, while the seller remains in possession. The new owner receives an income in the form of a lease payment from the old owner during the year of the contract. This lease income can be seen as being part of the profit mentioned in the ad..

Note how the seller can show his gold to third parties ( these are the victims of the hoax, or one of them imho ) who would not necessarily know that the seller has sold the gold:

Look over here Imran, heres my gold bars. You got oil? Perhaps we can play Twister.

Other Deals Mentioned by kitocoites:

Obsidians suggestion has merit- what we are seeing is just the collateral part of a currency loan arrangement:
Date: Sun Feb 22 1998 14:54
Obsidian ( @Aurator ) ID#237299:
Forget your talking about gold for a moment. Think collateral. Somebody wants to borrow 67 billion dollars for one year. But they want to hold your collateral in some sort of yielding escrow account. They promise the moon. The last section of the advertisement is very telling. ......
Now, what type of fed regulated high yield investment could that be, that is also allowing you to get you collateral back. Think gold loans. Think Central bank. Think ponsi scheme. How severe do you think 7000 tonnes
of gold would suppress world prices. If you've got 7000 tonnes of gold and you sell it you just shoot yourself in the wallet. If you've got 7000 tonnes of gold and you loan it at spot deferred and gut the world prices you get immense contango. Plus they've got *your* 67 billion in the meantime- to buy something that they *know* is going to quadruple. At
the end, even if you do get your gold it's devalued by half. You can't sell it because the prices are gutted and you'd shoot yourself. So you find some new sucker, and try to start the deal again.
*****
And mozel sees this as a possible forward sale contract:

You might also use the same mechanism to introduce 7000 tons of gold to the market now which are to be produced by mines with which you have a forward sale contract.
***

Again, I am out of my depth on these two. I would appreciate constructive input on these two posts. I do not think this contract is a hoax nor is it either a Sale or a Lease. The numbers are out of this world for all but: USA, RUSSIA, and one other party to comprehend.

I first thought it could be a Lease or a sale of gold. That is, while I was thinking that this contract actually involved gold. Now, I am not sure that gold is involved, I believe what we are seeing is not a hoax, but the embarassingly dirty underwear of a fraud----

Snowbird - Idealy I would like to see silver double top at 7.50 or make new highs around 7.70 but the odds for that happening are becoming less and less 50/50. Short term it shouldn't go much below 6.30 before a rally of .50 +/- . After that rally if it takes out 6.30 it will go straight down to 5.50. The SnP's are so strong if you have the money to back it I'd buy at the market ( 1038 ) and hold on, any dips should be minor and the market strength will save you if you have to weather it out.

This is most likely a JOKE
Poultry Passion

A Scotsman and an Englishman lived next door to each
other. The Scotsman owned a hen and each morning would
look in his garden and pick up one of his hen's eggs for
breakfast. One day he looked into his garden and saw that
the hen had laid an egg in the Englishman's garden. He was
about to go next door when he saw the Englishman pick up
the egg. The Scotsman ran up to the Englishman and told
him that the egg belonged to him because he owned the
hen.

The Englishman disagreed because the egg was laid on his
property. They argued for a while until finally the Scotsman
said, "In my family we normaly solve disputes by the
following actions: I kick you in the groin and time how long it
takes you to get back up, then you kick me in the groin and
time how long it takes for me to get up. Whoever gets up
quicker wins the egg."

The Englishman agreed to this and so the Scotsman found
his heaviest pair of boots and put them on, he took a few
steps back, then ran toward the Englishman and kicked as
hard as he could in the groin.

The Englishman fell to the floor clutching his nuts howling
in agony for 30 minutes. Eventually the Englishman stood
up and said, "Now it's my turn to kick you." The Scotsman
said, "Keep the damn egg."

Indonesia crisis seen posing regional trade threat
http://biz.yahoo.com/finance/980224/trade_indo_1.html
SYDNEY, Feb 24 ( Reuters ) - Further weakness in the Indonesian economy could lead to a flood of exports from Southeast Asia's biggest nation.
Montgomery, of Dunavant Enterprises, believes that a flood of Indonesian spun cotton exports would in turn put further pressure on China, another major cotton products exporter, to devalue its currency.
Apart from China, which earns 20 percent of its export income from textiles, Taiwan and virtually all the nations of Southeast Asia apart from Singapore have competing industries which would be hit hard by a flood of Indonesian exports.
Some fear the P.T. Bermis closure or other short-term measures might seem like a ripple when compared with an Indonesian export tide.
On Indonesia's domestic front, many fear a violent reaction to the short-term pain of an International Monetary Fund bailout package will be acute as IMF-mandated increased charges for fuel, electricity and other government-run services come into effect in April.
``If Indonesia doesn't come out of it quickly then it would affect the whole region,'' Narongchai told Reuters. ``The region cannot afford to have chaos in Indonesia -- definitely not.''

China mulls bank fund injection amid Asia crisis
http://biz.yahoo.com/finance/980224/china_bank_1.html
SHANGHAI, Feb 24 ( Reuters ) - China is considering a special bond issue to recapitalise major state-owned commercial banks as Asia's financial turmoil highlights the dangers of the nation's creaky banking system, analysts and officials said on Tuesday.
The nation's government-backed banks were technically insolvent after years of propping up ailing state firms, resulting in massive portfolios of non-performing loans, analysts said.
``If the government wants to reduce non-performing loans then banks still need money from the public,'' said Liao Qun, senior economist for Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong.
``China is learning lessons from the Asian financial crisis,'' he said. ``Zhu Rongji and the government are worried about the bank loan crisis, though not in the short term, and are taking steps to solve the problem.''
State banks were plagued by woefully inadequate risk management, murky quality of portfolios, and low and declining capital-asset ratios, the World Bank said.
``If, as the government estimates, their non-performing assets are equivalent to about 20 percent of their portfolios, their net worth is actually negative,'' it said.

SAfrica's Stals sees further EU cenbank gold sales
http://biz.yahoo.com/finance/980224/safrica_go_1.html

JOHANNESBURG, Feb 24 ( Reuters ) - South African Reserve Bank ( SRBJ.J ) governor Chris Stals said on Tuesday he expected more central bank gold selling in the run-up to the creation of a European Central Bank.

He told reporters after an investor conference that he did not anticipate a further dramatic effect on the gold price, which is a major influence on South Africa's economy.

``If you talk to the smaller central banks in Europe, they do feel that they will have surplus gold and they would like to sell some of that gradually into the market.

``It will depend a lot on what the European Central Bank will take over from them,'' he said.

Stals said the transfer of reserves from central banks of the countries entering the proposed European Monetary Union next January would be fixed by mid-year.

``I don't think any central bank will actually jump into the market and sell large amounts. If they have surplus gold they will sell it very gradually into the market,'' he said.

Australia's central bank sparked a sell-off in gold last July when it sold some of its gold reserves, raising fears that other central banks would follow suit.

Speculation over central bank sales drove bullion to 18-1/2 year lows below $280 an ounce earlier this year.

silver
All:

As RJ said yesterday the silver game is going to play out within the next two weeks. I would venture to say that the time frame is somewhat shorter. At the moment there is one big game going on, between one of the bullion houses and a fund. The fund is believed to be long some 20 million ounces with stops somewhere in the current neighborhood. The bullion house is trying to get a print below the stop number to force a liquidation. The game is just a game because there is no doubt that the bullion house will be a buyer if it can get the fund to bail. If the fund bails we will probably see a spike below $6.00. Time is running out on the bullion house because we are fast approaching first notice day. Once real silver has to be put on the table this thing is going higher.

Those who I have spoken to believe that the bullion house will probably win the game. Look for another attempt at the stops today, before the open interest numbers come out. If they don't get the print and the open interest declined very little yesterday, we will see a rally in the afternoon. Back to back days of failed attempts will embolden some hesitant longs. If the market starts to rally it will go very fast.

The other evidence which points to the gaming explanation is the size of the spread. If this market was selling off because real supply was coming to the market we would not have a 10 cent spread in the cash market. The boys trying to push this thing lower would never offer size near the market. They will either hit bids or leave big offers far away from the market. They know that someone may throw some chips on the table when it is least expected.

To have your cake and eat it.
SDR
I was wondering as I posted those articles, about how bad it is for the local Asians.
When I came to the one about US funds managers doing some prospective shopping.
It seems as though the paper merchants are getting away with all the goodies,
All their Gold, their debt assets, their factories, their banks.
Seems like they are ending up with everything,
And charging excessive interest rates for the privilege.

As the Eastern currency's are sinking,
They are selling their gold and assets at a higher Eastern price.
But the Western buyers of their gold and assets,
Are really getting their assets,
At the cheapest Western price ever.
And paying only in paper promises.

More and more as we near the top of this great bull cycle,
We see the transference of vast sums of wealth,
From the many to the few - rich few.
And from the East to the West.

It's like the wealth of the collective many is being channeled to the select few.

Sort of like the icing on the cake.

just.don't.know
Eldo:

It's hard to guess how far silver could fall if an avalanche of stops was hit. The other side of the equation is a man named Buffet. Remember that his original intent was to buy 200 million ounces. His last buy point was around 550. If we get near that number he may open the old wallet a shell out a few more pesos. Any silver he gets a hold of is not going to see the light of day for a good long while. I'd love to see the market hit 550 if I knew that WB was going to get is hands on another 50 million ozs.

For all the gaming going on, you can't lose sight of the fundamentals. The reality is that the physical stuff is just not out there. The stories we see about grandmothers selling their antique silver for melt are absurd. I have a hobby business of dealing in fine art and antiques. Since I frequent a lot of auctions I know the clearing price of 'junk' silver ( cheap hollowware, table silver etc ) and it is around $9.00 per ounce. If dealers are buying this stuff at $9.00 they are reselling it 30 - 50% higher. If a dealer can get 11 - 14 dollars an ounce you can be very sure he is not going to melt it down and get somewhat less that $6 after refining costs. The other big story is Indian silver demand. It is quite true that Indian demand is sensitive to price. Any spike down is going to see strong buying from that quarter as they try to scramble for raw material for their jewerly industry. If the reports are accurate in that Indians have been holding off purchases, there is a lot of pent up demand that will bet unleashed at lower prices. Bottom line is that WB got it right. Its just a question of where the new equilibrium price ends up and where the price spikes to between now and then. My bet remains that it is a long way from here.

SILVER DECLINE
Below $6.40, silver has taken out the short term up trendline. If it goes below $5.95, it will also take out the next trendline. Price needs to close above $6.40 today to keep me comfortable short term.

Regardless, only some indication that the fundamental situation has changed would I believe silver is headed lower for the longer term. As long as WB holds on to the 80 million he has accumulated and takes delivery on the remaining 40 million, and as long as demand continues to exceed supply by as much as 200 million annually, the only way for the price to go is up. If reports that $8 to $10 silver is necessary to encourage new production are indeed accurate, then that is a good target range for silver to settle. Accordingly, I personally have no intention to sell at this time and will selectively add to my position when this correction is over.

Of course, always the chance for a real spike up if the speculators get squeezed. However, in that instance, it would be the time to take some profits.

The lease rates have come down but the cash market price is still being quoted at around a 10 cent spread. Last I looked at Bart's page it was 637 bid - 647 offered. D.A. I can certainly agree with much of those fundamentals. My posted outlook is basically for this very short period of time. I would also be a buyer again at those lower levels, should they be seen. After all, I do not see the warehouse stocks making any particular increases. My warnings are mostly for those who may not have seen the 'possibilities' and could otherwise get badly burned. Opportunities also abound!

@D.A. and Silver
D.A.
I have a bunch ( 200 oz. ) of silver I bought years ago ( late 80s ) at about $7.00 thinking that I would make a short term profit. Ultimately I gave up and basically forgot about this silver. However if silver gets into the $14.00 range I'll be thinking of selling. My question is how many other people are there out there that have all this silver they have given up on, but once it gets say above $10.00 they'll be sellers. Ultimately creating a cap on silver prices in the $10.00 to $14.00 range.

All:

I posted something last night to the effect that gold and silver are not terribly connected. After having some conversations, I may have misspoken. Some of the people with whom I have spoken are surprised that the fund in question has not bailed out of silver by now. The explanation may lie in the gold market. It is possible that the fund which is under pressure in the silver market has taken out some insurance in the gold market by the way of a large short. If this is true then they may be able to weather the storm. The significance of this is that if silver turns then gold may also turn as they remove their hedge.

Here's a short opinion about the upcoming March silver delivery.

RE 10K gold: As you said the term 10K means 41.6% pure, so a 10 gram 10K ring, bracelet, coin or anything should contain 4.16 grs pure gold.

DA

Your post of this am in right on target. I know Phibro has been actively selling silver for the last week.. and they will be long once they shake out the weaker money. I have been cautiously buying silver between 6.40 - 6.50 for the last week and will add some new longs today. Prices will rise very fast when, as you say, the real stuff is on the table. I think 6.30 silver is a gift.

Aurater ( aurater ) -

We get a couple calls a month from these dreamers who want to buy X number of metric tonnes of gold at X percent below spot. The younger brokers still get all worked up and excited as they run around the building telling everyone about this guy ( usually mid-eastern ) who going to buy all these tons of gold. Nothing ever comes of any of it. Look at it this way, If you could buy gold below spot with this hand and sell at spot with the other hand, you would make the spread just for transferring the gold from one hand to the other. If this is such a big deal, why would anyone need this schmoe in the middle? Pay this "rag" little heed, big buyers buy from the source. Barb posted about dealers and banks yesterday. As usual, she is mistaken, or at least not wholly correct. We buy directly from the mints. There are no banks between us and the mints. The week-long delay in shipping gold coins is a factor of the mint's delay in shipments to us. We are the largest sellers of Maple Leafs and Philharmonics in the world, so we are at the top of the food chain, when our delay is a week, small dealers usually have to wait up to a month.

The fundamentals of supply and demand will not have anything to do with where an upside spike terminates. Over the short time frame, physical silver can just not be mobilized ( refined, assayed, delivered ) as fast as paper money. As a wild guess, the near long term ( 1-5 years ) probably sees an equilibrium price around 7.50.

Channels - A new picture emerges
Upon careful study of the metals price charts, I noticed that the movements in the silver price have been reflected in the prices of gold and platinum. Lately, silver has abruptly dropped from the top of "Warren's Finger" to near the bottom of its upward-trending channel. There is a corresponding drop in both gold and platinum, but both are still well above their respective channel bottoms. In fact, one can construct new upward trending channels that contain the recent price movements for both gold and platinum. I see one of two scenarios happening in the near term. I would appreciate any evidence and analyses any of you might have as to which is likely to play out.

Scenario 1: Silver will break out of its up channel, either heading sideways or down. Gold /platinum will continue down to test previous lows. ( Many depressed Kitco folk ) .

Scenario 2: Silver will be contained in its up channel, reversing its recent downward movement. Gold/platinum will follow it up, and will break out of the long term down channels. The bear will be dead. Celebration across Kitco.

In my opinion, it may be a few weeks before we know for certain. I think it is likely that silver will, in the near term, recover somewhat, taking gold and platinum back up to the tops of their respective long term downward-trending channels. We may well see pennant patterns forming, as gold/platinum bounce back and forth between the top of the down channels and the bottom of the new upward trending channels. However, by the end of March, one scenario or the other will play out.

Here is the channels chart. Study it carefully.

@ ALL.
Am I reading this forum correctly that a concensus of opinion exists that the POG is in a week or two correction. Its my feeling we are going to see an intra-day low in the week or two time frame of 278 and change. It is after that point that I'm not sure where were headed. If I'm wrong about this whole thing the other option is a major shake-out to the downside. All opinions appreciated!

Scenario 2
In support of scenario 2, I offer the currency chart. Note the world gold currency has broken its steep down trend. Although a new trend is not clearly defined, it is clear that the worst is over. Second, note that the world gold price is soaring! In the last few weeks, it crashed through 2-years highs, and is heading up at a fantastic rate.

Again, I would really appreciate your input re: conventional TA, Elliot-wavers, fundamentalists, and even astrologers ( Mike ) .

------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON ( AP ) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan hailed the
remarkable performance of the U.S. economy today but warned that ``storm
clouds'' coming out of Asia carried unusually high uncertainty about the
future.
Delivering his semi-annual economic report to Congress, Greenspan
indicated that the central bank was content for the time being to leave
interest rates alone and see how developments unfold.

He termed the current economic expansion, which will enter its eighth
year next month, an ``exemplary performance'' with inflationary
pressures falling last year despite the fact that the unemployment rate
dropped to the lowest sustained levels since the late 1960s

Bullion stakeholders vote for gold hedging
from LBMA

Gold hedging has been given an unequivocal thumbs-up following a debate hosted by the London Bullion Market Association ( LBMA ) yesterday ( 19 February 1997 ) . The final count showed 66 votes in favour of hedging with only 16 against.

In his argument against the motion, Dr Birch said accelerated product selling was a contributory factor to market weakness. "Mining companies are selling far more gold than they produce," he commented. "They have created a dangerous dealing house environment where risk taking is applauded. But for hedging, the gold price would be much higher.
http://www.woza.co.za/lbma.htm

So, a year ago LBMA found it necessary to bring everyone into the game. Is that a fair inference?

Insight into Silver markets, Gold markets
D.A.,RJ: Appreciate both of your comments on the manipulations of the silver market, something the big CB's don't care about! Even then, the mystery of the workings of the silver market is fascinating to learn about. No wonder the gold market is so hard to understand!
RJ -- I enjoyed your comments to Aurator about the mystery bid to buy 7,000 tonnes of gold. I do have one question --- do you know why the CB's decided not to manage their gold transactions through the BIS, and instead use middle men in the private sector during the last two years or so? As you say these were large quantities of gold that were traded ( 8000 tonnes ) , so middle men would not be neccessary . Apparently the CB's did something similar in the 70's when they wanted to sell large quantities of gold. Why did they do this?
Could it be that the CB's wanted the private bullion houses ( or whatever they are called ) to know about the gold sales/loans - to encourage speculation? Or was it because the derivatives trades were very complex, and better suited to certain specialized places such as the LBMA.

How about--a Purloined Letter Ploy?

If grumblings were beginning to surface about the size and number of forward sales ( e.g. ) well, then, LBMA holds a forum to prove that anyone who is with it is doing it...and the Official Policy is nicely camouflaged in the ratcheting up of paper gold trades!

We might speculate that the War being waged ( the dollar is good war--because the dollar IS the System ) was of such significant importance that it justified the considered gamble of giving legitimacy to the paper gold game.

LGB: From what I've read Armstrong has ( had? ) a short position of 500 contracts. Not a huge position. The guy is no idiot, has a Ph.D. in physics and manages billions for institutions and governments. He does have a bug up his bum about silver though I do agree. His track record seems pretty good to me from what I've learned by investgating his past predictions. For one he was well ahead of the herd in predicting an asian currency crisis and a strengthening dollar through this period. He has also been rightly bearish on gold. One of the things that I like about his methods is that he uses chaos theory in making predictions on the markets. This is interesting to me and I believe deserves further attention from gold bugs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a naive epigone of Armstrong. No one after all is right 100% of the time. Hey this is fun. I got the day off today. Response from USAGold re COMEX delayed shipments (Qestor and Tyler Rose)
I do not think at the moment 1800 ounces would cause COMEX problems
versus eligible stocks. Gold Fields Mineral Services, in its recent
Update 1997 does report spot shortages of smaller bars -- the type that
mints purchase. This has caused occasional delays at the clearing house
level, but nothing serious at this point. It does point to potential
problems down the road, however, when the thousands of investors could
be scrambling for gold and straining the gold market infrastructure. In
other words if you are concerned about the future economy and want to
own physical gold, it is in your interest to purchase now. This is why
I agree so strongly with ANOTHER and why I believe he has provided such
a service. Keep in mind that gold is a very small business when
compared to the equities markets. We are not equipped for mass demand.
My advice to gold investors has been ( and remains ) : If you are
purchasing gold for asset preservation purposes buy the physical metal
and hold at these low cyclical prices. The gold chart is characterized
by spikes that result from many years of pent up pressure on the price.
The pressure at some point is released and the metal skyrockets. This is
gold's history. Unless you are very lucky, it is difficult ( though not
impossible ) to catch these gold market spikes. Timing is crucial if you
want to be a commodities' speculator. The physical owner pursuing a
conservative acquisition program can afford to be patient and wait.
You can post this on Kitco if you like. THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION!

The LBMA mystery continues - indefinitely
SDRer: Your 12:10 -- Makes sense -- thanks. I had guessed the same thing about why the CB's went 'public' with their gold sales or loans. Back in the 70's they went public too, when the idea was clearly to make gold go down as fast as they could. I guess that is to be expected when you don't have a total monopoly of a market -- you have to get the other players to join in. But -- it backfired, didn't it? Gold went down a bit faster than expected, and now individuals who don't play their game got gold bullion for a song.
I enjoyed your LBMA post -- got the same impression, that gold derivatives trading at the LBMA will not be curtailed, no matter how much commotion develops. Just organize a meeting of shareholders, and vote. It would be ludicrous to expect the members of the LBMA organization would vote against continued gold derivatives trading.
I loved one quote from LBMA chairman Alan Baker that you did not post:
".... the ( gold ) debate was of great value in bringing some of the arguments for and against the practice ( of gold derivatives trading ) into the public arena. The dividing line between hedging and speculation is a thin one. But not to hedge is to speculate".
The way I read this is that once you let the gold derivatives genie out of the bottle, there is no way to recap it. Market forces will be the only things that will affect outcome, and not any effort at regulation of an organization that has survived over 200 years, and undoubtedly has tacit approval to operate by the Rothschilds.
The gold producers now have to live with whatever they have created ( in part ) by their own desire to lock in future gold prices.
However, we have learned something by the fact that the LBMA has even met on this topic -- and that is that the gold producers are feeling the heat. They will not be selling more gold forward at current prices, and are undoubtedly worried about whether their 'buyers', whoever they are, will keep buying their gold at the higher prices, such as $410/oz. I wonder -- is the LBMA liable if one of their clients defaults? Perhaps the client just gets blacklisted.
As others have said, it is time for the gold producers to look at fundamentals, and close unprofitable mines, rather than hedge with 'paper'. It will be interesting to see how many other gold producers will go bankrupt in the next few months, having been tricked into selling gold forward.

Trip to florida
All:

We returned home last night from our trip to Orlando. We had a
wonderful time, went to three Disney parks, Disney World, Epcot Center
and Disney MGM Grand. Of the three, we enjoyed Epcot the most. It is
geared more to adults. There were CROWDS of people, the food in the
parks is very expensive and not very good except for Epcot center. We
had a very nice lunch at a beautiful restaurant.

We visited friends in Lake Suzie, ( about 30 miles north
of Ft. Myers ) . They are very nice people, took us to lunch at a nice
place with very good food. We enjoyed our visit with them, they are
coming west to Lake Powell in September, they are going to try to visit
us.

The weather was great while we were there except for Sunday night. We
woke up in the middle of the night and it was storming very bad, wind,
rain and lightning. The next morning, the news said that there had
been tornadoes north and south of us and 36 people lost their lives, we
were blessed that they went around us. Did you weather the storm with everything intact Oldman??? Sure hope so.

We enjoyed our trip, but its good to be home and sleep in our own
bed.

Did not meet any Kitcoits this trip, we are going to Pheonix & Tucson Az. next month, any Kitcoits there??? Would enjoy having a cup of coffee with you.

PLEASE, LET'S FACE REALITY AND TRY TO BE CONSIDERATE POSTERS!
Crazytimes posted something at 00:54 that made me cringe. Everyone has the right to post until Bart says otherwise. There seems to be an endemic attitude by some ( not all ) , that nobody, and they mean nobody but a select circle, has anything to contribute to this site but them. We all have something to learn from each other and you have the option to accept or reject others thoughts or opinions. The excuse of bandwidth overload is just that. An excuse to drive anyone away that does not meet thier selfish, moi, I'm the only one that knows anything, almighty opinion and how dare you insert your rubbish into OUR forum. ( As if they OWN IT. )

To continuously downgrade or INSULT others is not civil and contrary to an honest, open discussion of the facts. From what I've seen from my short period on this forum, MOST ( NOT ALL ) of the advice has been emotional and incorrect. I wonder how many have viewed by lurking, taken bad advice that they accept as the last word, and plunged into PM's and taken a beating, if not a severe beating investing in PM's. We are all adults and should act responsibly when we post. I'm not lily white either. I do apologise to others if I have offended them or given bad advice. ( After all, the Godfather said we are all human and prone to err. )
Look into your SOULS, and see if you're just being emotional and hyping wishful thinking. A good joke or a little bantering is a good thing to ease the tensions we are all feeling.

Everybody should be open minded and use thier own judgement as to what is rubbish or good and leave it at that. Even many off the wall comments might have some merit to them and directly or indirectly affect the PM's. At least respect the person, not neccessarily the opinion.

One last word ( forgive me Bart ) , CONSPIRACY is listed in the dictionary. Look it up if you do'nt know what it means. The media has convinced many that CONSPIRACIES are only believed by nincompoohs, idiots and irrational persons. They ( the media, governments ) do'nt want you to know the truth. We've all been trying to figure why the world seems to be upside down, markets going up when they should'nt, the Fed, BIS, IMF, Bilderburgers, CFR, Trilateralists, The Club of Rome, The Rothschilds, Morgans, Rockefellers, CB's, fractional reserve systems, Asian crisis, Clinton scandels, worthless paper, rumors of war, big name foundations that we the taxpayer subsidize, ad nauseum.

One more last word. ( sorry again Bart ) Does anyone deny that these entities exist? What is thier true purpose? I'll say it again for the brain washed and brain dead, why is gold, the markets or many other similar things defing all logic and common sense? IMHO, we're all sheep playing into thier hands and gold or other PM's should only be a small portion of one's portfolio as insurance. One should have a mix of gold ( mines and physical ) and just hold on until the tables turn. This hype about one might to be too late to enter PM's once it starts is wrong thinking. There is a window anyone can get in and still benefit once PM's move up. ( Anyone who tries to catch the exact bottom or top is either physcic or physco. ) This is still not that time.

LOOK A LITTLE DEEPER AND YOU MIGHT FIND THE ANSWERS! AND I RESPECT YOU ALL ( EVEN IF MY WORDS SEEM HARSH. ) AND DO FEEL THE SAME PAIN. PEACE TO ALL AND PLEASE DO'NT KILL THE MESSENGER.

TIME correspondent Bruce Van Voorst believes
Decembers 9-year-record trade deficit is a sign of
things to come, plummeting Asian currencies send a
tsunami of cheap imports towards America, while
Japan's failure to stimulate its domestic demand and
absorb some of Asia's exports exacerbates the crisis.
"If the trend reflected in the December U.S. trade

it will - the Asian crisis could knock 1 percent off our

Noise and all that
I'm perfectly content to see POG bounce around in a 3%+/- range here. A certain amount of volatility in markets is indicative of a healthy give and take among the players. We will not see the trending moves by looking at daily flux ( IMHO ) because this is like looking for pictures in clouds. Whatever you see will only be a projection of your fears or desires. Recent book about chaos in markets indicates that 20 to 40 days in the earliest we can see patterns which are reliable indicators of trendness ( in equities anyway ) . This continues out to about 4 to 5 years. In other words the markets lag news, remember past events and tend to trend either up or down based on perceptions of the past 30 days to 5 years.

A good 30 day moving average is a decent beginning in filtering noise out. Does anyone care to post a 30 MA on gold for the past three years?

Its obvious that the paper markets wag the dog here. People fiddling with representations of gold rather than gold itself.

The 7000 metric tonne ad, to my mind, is a fabrication of some kind for some reason. It is not what it seems to be. It seems to be an ad to sell gold. But the numbers are to large and the arrangement to public. It could be a scam. It could be a pre-arranged signal to a widely dispersed group of players. IMO it is not what it seems to be.

long bond rate
As some have mentioned lately, there is a very unusual pattern taking place with the long bond rate. In the last few days, it has climbed from 5.81 to 5.97 as gold, silver, gold stocks, XAU, and gold funds have declined. Meanwhile the yen is dropping past 128/$, and the dollar is not showing weakness as if it were being sold.

In the past 6 months, this rate increase led into a gold rally after only one day of significant increase. These last few days seem to be changing the rules, but I tend to think we are stepping into rally territory. CYA.

@Larryn_A. I think that interest rates are moving up to attract / retain US $ denominated funds that
are apparently being converted out, Where it is going and into, is anybody's guess. Doesnt look like it is moving into US equities now.
Also, if anybody here who has the contacts to find out WHO are the big shorters in Gold these past few days will give us a good clue as to many mysteries that seem to dictate POG movement.

Also, I feel that the world is getting fed up with US arrogance in global politics/economics and in dictating what is 'right' and 'wrong' while using double standards in dealing with different countries on like issues, Also there is a feeling that US Citizens are totally brain washed and seem to fully support the administration inspite of questions of morality emanating from Whitewater, renting bedrooms in WH, G Flowers, P Jones, Lewinsky, Vince Foster, Ron Brown, Killing women and children in Waco blaze, Backing out of ME Peace accords inspite of being a GUARANTOR of these, Citizens Tax money footing the Bill on mis adventures in dealing with Iraq, Heavy handed US approach through control of UN/IMF/G-7.

Re your earlier request for pointers on "Saints".

1 ) Both the "raw" BU and the certified BU are better buy's and have better appreciation potential than circulated stuff ( which I'd avoid )

2 ) Buy them "untoned" if possible, the market's better for lustrous "brilliant" pieces.

3 ) If you buy "raw" ( unslabbed, uncertified ) , you'll pay less from most dealers than certified, however, beware of shiny "cleaned" AU coins ( very lightly circulated ) masquerading as BU. Buy from a reputable dealer, I can't name names here or Bart'll get mad. My advice, get a "Coin World" at a large magazine/bookseller, and run a "test order" of 1 piece from several dealers and compare price/quality/delivery.

Nice BU raw coins are around $440 to $480. See Roebell's post below for wholesale cost of certified "Saints".

4 ) Ask the dealer if they'll buy back their own coins and what the spread is. If you hear a lot of hemming and hawing and ambiguity, AVOID that dealer like the plague!

Also, if a dealer isn't quick to give you a good quote based on what you're requesting, and seems to be "feeling you out" to determine what you know and how much they might "take you" for, AVOID them like the plauge! ( I won't name names cause Bart'll get mad! )

5 ) Don't get talked into "Liberty" $20 pieces which trade at slightly less. The "Saint" is a more liquid, more sought after coin and worth the extra $10 premium. ( I'm talking common dates here of course...in the rare stuff, there are expensive date/mint combo's in both series that are highly sought after by Numismaticists )

6 ) Ask about delivery times before ordering. The lowest priced dealer of BU "Saints" in coin world, who is selling about $15 below anyone else, delivers inferior coins with a 6 to 8 week delivery time. ( Again, I shan't name names... ) For the most part you get what you pay for.

7 ) If all the foibles and pitfalls of "raw" Saints seems too daunting, stick with "certified" Saints slabbed by either NGC or PCGS, untoned, in grades of M/S 62 or M/S 63 if you want a lot of Gold, or M/S 64 and M/S 65, if you want to try for more "premium" leverage, but less Gold in an up POG market. The higher grade coins tend to increase more exponentially in a hot market, and correspondingly, their premiums shrink more during mean, bad, viscous bear markets like we've seen the past few years.

You can buy beautiful M/S 65 Saints right now, for less than 25% of what they cost in 1980.

Remember, "there aren't minting any more of these". When demand starts to build...look out! Finite supply.... of the "World's most beautiful coin" ( according to many Numismaticists )

cmh ( Another ) representative of the Islamic Mint? Hmmmm, I wonder...

I dont think so...He is sometimes gently chiding, sometimes gently teasing but remarkably objective and analytic. His principled conviction has burned bright only once ( that I have seen ) , when he said, In the past many world governments and leaders, far greater than those today have embraced these thoughts. I and my fathers have done battle with such evil and won! For we have 6,000 years of history as our armor! , and once again--in a quite factual if not dispassionate manner, when he wrote, There is one oil state that no one will play for a fool.

When one reads the small amount of literature from the Mirabutin, the passion forms every letter of every word ( again, my personal view obviously ) . So, my guess--would be Asian, a manner of thinking shaped by a philosophy of life rather than religious belief. IMVHO

Gold: Fell 97 troy ounces to 440,342

Silver: Plunged 2,275,553 troy ounces to 89,747,932 ( ! ) -A new 16 year low

The situation in Silver is turning to the "explosive" side once again and now that many weak traders have been shaken out and now that the usual "complex psychology" seems to have done it's job on most of the late comers, some upside potential is at hand once again.

response to Pete 13:35 and ALL as per my 00:54 post
Unfortunatley, as a medium of communication, the internet discussions have many flaws compared to a live conversation. The biggest flaw being that one cannot hear the voice of people which expresses so much, if not more of what a person has to say. My post of 00:54 was meant as a compliment to this Discussion Group. I have found this group to be the best discussion groups on the net. I am a goldbug, yes, but even aside from that, the posts on here show me an incredible intelligence, perception, knowledge and humor. Although I am new here myself, I so much look forward to logging on. Part of the reason for my like of this site is in fact it's diversity. One of my posts, I stated that I missed Ziva, and I MEANT it. It was not a sarcastic remark. It's hard to tell that from just the written word though. I DO BELIEVE though that one of the reasons for the keen perception on here is due to the contrarion nature of most of the people here. As per my post, which I stated that the "downside" of an "upside" in Gold would be the onslaught of many people on here that would most likely NOT be contrarion or Goldbugs for that matter. IMHO, that would change the discussions dramatically. I don't mean to offend anyone by that. It is very clear to me that the appeal of the posts on here are due to the fact that people on here are not "running with the crowd". I admit I don't like crowds, but that does not speak to any one individual. This forum and the internet in general is the closest thing to a true democracy-any one individual has a voice ( if you can afford a computer, that is ) Forgive me, Pete and ALL if I offended anyone. Long live Kitco's discussion group no matter what the POG does.

I too believe that silver will go higher, but be careful about the "silver is so low now" commentary. Let us not forget that silver is approx. 50% above it's July low. An absolutely extraordinary rise, and multi year high, and one that has happened in half a year.

We had quite a few analysts on this very forum who mere WEEKS ago, stated that $6.00 silver was too high and unsupportable by the fundamentals. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro silver all the way, but we musn't succumb to "irrational exuberance".

Silver price & stocks
LGB, at the time COMEX silver stocks were more or less twice as much of what's available today. That has to have a tremendous impact on price. Actually I'm surprised that Silver's spot has fallen today 13c. I've been told that Fund managers are selling out some of their positions in order to weed out the small investor and build pressure on the spot price. That way they will be able to manipulate the market and let silver's price skyrocket. With the COMEX warehouse this low, that will happen soon. My feeling is that it hasn't happened so far because Kodak announced that it has hedged half of their 1998 consumption of silver back mid last year. Its my understanding that photo industry consumes around 80.000.000 ounces of silver per year!!! ( Is that figure accurate? ) And with the DOW about head south, who knows what are the limits!
I'm also puzzled though about WB's delivery. His silver is currently coming out of COMEX and he's still waiting for 30 million ounces. When are they delivering his silver? Is all actually coming out of COMEX?

@ Today's silver drop, I think we're at bottom
Or near enough...good commentary following..we're almost shed of the weak Johhny come lately wanna be Buffet's.....

New York--Feb 24--COMEX Mar silver futures fell 13.8 cents at $6.335
per ounce after hitting a 3-week low of $6.29 on technically-driven fund
sales. Apr gold ended down $2 at $292.70 per ounce, extending Monday's
losses, as bearish sentiment increased following President Clinton's
acceptance, albeit with some reservations, of the Iraq-UN pact on weapons
inspections.

Many struggled to explain the reason for silver's decline, given that
the continued drop in COMEX stocks should be bullish.
However, George Gero, senior vice-president of investments at
Prudential Securities, said that disappointed longs were exiting silver.
"People didn't realize that when ( US investor Warren ) Buffett stopped
buying it was the top of the market...All these Buffett followers are now
wondering what's next and they don't have the patience, fortitude or long-
term view that he does," Gero said.
Buffett's company Berkshire Hathaway announced the purchase of 129.7
million ounces of silver, helping to send Mar silver prices to a 9 1/2 year
high of $7.50 on continuation charts on Feb 6.
Some suggested that Mar-May rollover is also responsible for the Mar
price decline. After being at a premium to May for sometime, Mar moved
virtually level with May on Monday and today ended at a discount, with May
silver settling at $6.365.
Gero noted that the disappearance of the premium of Mar silver over May
Monday was bearish. "If this premium is disappearing it means people don't
want physical and that's bearish," he said.
"It's just disappointment that silver didn't follow-through on its
highs, so people are getting impatient and selling it," said one trader.
Some suggested that today's CPM Group annual silver report helped stem
today's silver price drop. One trader suggested that the CPM estimate that
European stocks may total 150 million ounces by the end of February was
less than many had expected.
Traders said that the open interest in Mar was "dropping to a
manageable level," making problems on Friday's first notice day unlikely.
However, some are expecting that there could be a scramble to take
delivery, with COMEX stocks still at low levels.
COMEX stocks fell again today, dropping by a huge 2,275,553 ounces to
89,747,932 ounces, their lowest level since the 89,563,975 ounces reported
Jun 28, 1983.
Traders said that both silver and gold would be choppy ahead of
Wednesday's over-the-counter option expiration.
Meanwhile, gold continued to see price erosion from the UN-Iraq pact on

Market Manipulators?
Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in the government they often try other startegies with dead horses, including the following:
1. Buying a stronger whip.
2. Changing riders
3. Saying things like "This is the way we always have ridden this horse."
4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses.
6. Increasing the standards to ride dead horses.
7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse.
8. Creating a training session to increase riding ability.
9. Pass legislation declaring that "This horse is not dead."
10.Blaming the horse's parents.
11.Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed.
12.Declaring that "No horse is too dead to beat."
13.Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.
14.Do a study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper.
15.Declare the horse is "better, faster, cheaper" dead.
16.Form a quality circle to find uses for dead horses.
17.Revisit the performance requirements for horses.
18.Say this horse was procured from the low bidder.
19.Close the horse farm on which it was born.
20.Promote the horse to a supervisory position!!!

I posed a question earlier about Buffett's deliveries. My fear is that he may not still be waiting for 30 million ounces but his deliveries have been being filled through COMEX inflows. Am I correct that

inventory change = COMEX inflows minus COMEX outflows

COMEX reports inventory level, not daily flows.

Sure hope he's still waiting. Go silver...

Glenn:

This idea that gold and silver inventories at the Comex are both indicative of potential squeezes is not really true. While there is a lot more silver on a relative basis at Comex, once you move out into the real world the story is very, very, different. Silver has been steadily consumed over the last 5 - 10 years and world stockpiles of deliverable silver are extremely low. The same can not be said for gold. Any squeeze in gold could be met with easy deliveries unless some other big thing was going on causing a huge move into gold. In silver the situation is far different. Any one of several funds or perhaps hundreds of individuals could easily take out the Comex and there would be very little around to replace it. Unless of course the price went much, much, higher.

Total Comex inventories now stand at less than .7 Buffets.

Nike sees earnings hurt by Asia, U.S. inventory woes

LOS ANGELES ( Reuters ) - Nike Inc., the world's largest sports shoe maker, said Tuesday its earnings for the latest quarter would be lower than Wall Street expectations and that it was planning job cuts.

"This isn't just about job reductions, it's really about reorganizing the way we do our business," Lee Weinstein, director of corporate communications, said.

Weinstein said he could not estimate how many jobs would be cut. The company has just more than 19,000 employees worldwide, including 11,600 in the United States."At this point we don't know what the numbers will be,"

Jihad agfainst usury!
I read the 08:49 post by SDRer. I found it extremely enlightening!
Coupled with the immense population of Muslims on the planet, I believe the "Jihad against Usury" copuld very well spell several things: among them the end of credit banking; the stock markets as we know them; a war begun by the West and our Israeli partners to protect the interests of the world Bankers and their clique of megalomaniacs.
Joined in by all of the beknighted occidentals to "preserve democracy" or "our way of life" or some such slogan!

The following was only one of many meaningful paragraphs in the work on 'Return Of The Kaliphate"!

Allah in the Qur'an has declared war on usury.
"O you who believe, give up what remains to you of usury, if you are indeed
believers. If not, take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.. ( Qur'an
10:20 )
The kuffar have imposed their usurious system of Interest-debt and worthless
paper money on the whole world. The peoples of the world are enslaved by
unpayable debts, resulting in starvation, disease, moral degradation and political
impotence. Usury is the cornerstone of kufr, it is the source of their power. We
cannot submit to their tyranny. Join the war against usury. Fight in the way of
Allah.

Some certainly have although no one can say how much.

This market is not so much a market as it is a game. With options expirey in the OTC market due tomorrow, we are at the maximum point of gamesmanship. What the outcome of the game is no one can say. All one can do is place a bet, sit back and hope.

The whole thesis of our bet was that with declining inventories someone would make a play. This has happened. With inventories now substantially lower and the price not really reflecting the decline, it seems likely that another player or players will emerge to administer the coup de grace.

In following the commodities markets for many, many moons I have never seen a market that was 'almost' squeezed. It is highly unlikely that the silver market is going to become the first.

I have been patiently accumulating physical silver and silver mining stocks for perhaps 4 years, with many false starts, always knowing that the fundamentals would overcome the sellers sooner or later, and when the stocks were depleted to an amount small enough, then someone would step up and grab the brass ring. I really expected 298. to hold and a rally to at least 315. by now but the market will have none of it.
As others have pointed out, there is plenty of physical to satisfy all the buyers out there so there is no apparent shortage.
The market is even more awash in paper Gold.
The Gold stocks are now approaching their lows of December ------ and that is traditionally the worst time of the year for Golds due to tax loss selling!

Coke and Windows? or Asia and Gold? [Adrain Day's bon mot]

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Asian market meltdown has been the realignment in respective weightings of various world markets. For example, in the Morgan Stanley Emerging Markets Index, three European markets--Russia, Turkey and Hungary--now account for as much as ALL OF ASIA! The Venezuelan market is now larger than Koreas.

And--are you ready for this--for the price of just two companies--Microsoft and Coca-Cola--you could buy ALL the stocks in every emerging market in Asia ( Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia ) AND every gold stock in the world! In fact, take out Singapore and Malaysia, and could could pretty much buy the package for just one of the big U.S. companies!

The 13:00 post was pasted from an email sent to me by the staff at USAGold. So it is not something I wrote.

A few days ago one of your staff wrote about gold/oil backing of the US Dollar and how this developed. That seemed clear to me. It would seem logical that the US Dollar is now supported by oil interests rather than its own fiscal prudence or wisdom ( gold backed US$ ) . This, of course, means that the USA is in an extremely vulnerable position if the equation for world financial stability ( oil backing ) were to be distributed to other currencies ( gold? ) .

Ultimately we have to many dollars in the world. A revaluation of gold would certainly absorb many of those dollars. This would buy time. However it would not stop the USA from continuing to flood the world with paper. What would be the next step in this process?

Silver recovery from coins
I noticed all the comments about WB's extra 30 million ozs of silver. I believe there has been large inflows from major refineries ( Engelhard, Johnson Matthey ) . Many bags of junks silver have moved to refineries over the last 4 months, and much of this silver is marketed through the bullion houses. There has been limited unloading of silver at the consumer level, mostly by people who bought it 10 years ago. 1-10-100 ounce bars are flowing in, and this time many are being melted, because they are selling at the wholesale level at a discount to spot. Anything selling less than $ 0.25 to spot is likely to be melted.

Yesterday, I was in one of the local coin stores I buy junk silver from in balk. A regular blue collar guy came in and bought a 10 oz Engelhard bar for $85.00. He said that his brother had told him it was a good investment. How many more are out there who believe.

SDRer re 1/10 Isle of man
I have a rough measure for a cubic mm of gold = .02 grams. I measured the coin best I could. It is 19 mm diameter. Has a bezel and can't remove. thickness appears to be less than a mm. Closest volume I can get is 160 cu mm. At .02 grams/cu mm this gives 3.15 grams. Should be 3.11 about for a 1/10 at 999.9 fine. all my measuring instruments are somewhere else at the moment. The .02/cu mm could be refined. How does this compare with the dimensions you have?

Now, since no one can know what the future holds-except GOD-I submit that whatever value Another has is the information regarding gold being in short supply relative to the outstanding IOU's which will come due in the next one to six months ( contracts and derivatives ) . Is gold short? That is the question. Anybody able to call UBS, Korea, China, Saudi, London and the CB's to get the answer? If so please come for dinner ASAP-I'd like to be friends. new pair-a-dimes
Silver Dimes, that is ( preferably mercury dimes ) . Have noticed more lately that the markets are not irrationally exuberant, they are just plain crazy. Illogical. For example, Iraq tentative peace agreement results in gasoline up $.56, which I suspected it would. There is just no logic, no supply-demand rules, it is just a playground of and for fools. As this regresses, the situation will degrade to increasing unpredictability as the fundamentals are left further and further behind. This seems true not just in PM's, but all equities. Manipulation is perhaps one explanation, but I do not lend that much intelligence to the markets. Perhaps we can call it the "dumbing down" of the markets, but with much more severe consequences. Deflation, Disinflation, or how about just flatulation?

Al,

I think you have it right on CAU. The fact that the market willl only pay 7/8 for it today is no reflection on your analysis. Soon it will trade much higher.
I think the odds are good that MacDonald will get approved. It just takes time and we've known that for three years now. So far, several legal hurdles have been leapt.
In Montana, if anyone want to bring a lawsuit to stop MacDonald, they'll have to reimburse the state for tax revenues lost during the litigation period if they lose.
I think enough of Montana will want this mine that it will get permitted.

A Banker, a Broker and a Goldbug find

dollars for investigation, 100
dollars for his analysis and 100
dollars for profit. The
Broker, RJ, examines the
markets and announces an
estimate of 900 dollars. St.
Peter asks again and is
told 300 dollars for
investigation, 300 dollars for
analysis and 300 dollars for
profit. The Banker,
Nathen Rothschild, takes a
look at the gates and
announces an estimate of
2300 dollars. St. Peter is
taken back and asks Nathen
why such an high price.
Nathen takes St. Peter aside
and whispers "one

thousand for you, and we
get the Goldgug, tolerant1, to fix the market for 300
dollars!".

THOUGHTS!
Hello,
One of my favorite sayings comes from Another, this thing of life, it is a hard game we play, yes?. It does seem to cover all the emotions, I use it often.
But, this game of gold, it is not only hard, but will cost anyone dearly if they try it without all the facts! Do we have the facts, or is this really just a game? I think, for many investors, the precious metals have become a game of such, even a gamble that they never intended to take. Conservative persons, trying to protect a lifes savings entered
this arena with a clear direction, that of protecting their assets from uncertainty. Far too few made it to this end. They read the numerous gold books and newsletters from the last 20 years and came to a solid conviction that, I can make a fortune at this or at least a small killing!
The gold market is made up of a very broad spectrum of investors. At the very farthest ends of this spectrum lie the persons with the largest influence on the physical bullion. The super wealthy at one end and the third world no ones at the other. The middle is occupied, mostly, by the investors with western thought. The far ends buy bullion. And they dont buy it as a gamble or a game! It is a way of life that has worked, through thick and thin, even before the West was The West.
Now, on the other hand, this modern day middle of the spectrum! Well, they have read why we need gold, but they have never Experienced the need for gold! Until that day, when they gain Experience, most of them will make A Gamble That They Never Intended To Take. Yes, they do invest in all forms of paper and or leveraged gold and all the while, expounding from the roof tops the coming currency crashes and stock
market declines. Even looking for bank closures and bank runs, as they cling dearly to comex options and gold stocks!
Anyone, from the outside looking in can clearly see that westerners do lack experience. What does this have to do with the current market? Lets move on.

As Another has said, this market is like none before. That is so, very, true. There is a flaw in this modern market that many do not quite grasp. In time, they will! There have always been people and companies that make a living dealing in gold. It is an ages old business. Today, we see a phenomenon that is as none before. It is mostly done by the investors at the middle of the spectrum. The trading of gold has grown to a level never seen in history! You read every day, that no one wants or needs gold! In a way those statements are very correct! No investor wants to hold gold, but everyone and his brother ( and sister ) want to trade it! The volume of paper trading, worldwide, on and off market is beyond belief! It has created a type of Parallel Paper Gold Universe, existing side by side with the physical. The major flaw in this system is found in the makeup of the traders of this paper gold universe. Without fail, the majority is made up by those in the middle of the spectrum, those without loss of currency Experience . Mostly,
they are of western thought.
Without the experience of the destruction of currency as a mental control, the paper gold universe will expand! I will not begin to list the types of paper gold available for trade, but from comex gold options to huge corporate derivatives, the overriding motive with gold is clear. I will trade gold, up or down and make currency on it!

Ladies and gentlemen, today, the paper gold market is larger than available, tradable physical gold, by a factor of three! This market will continue to expand until we reach a massive gold derivatives failure. This will come about as those, who had no wish to gamble, but traded paper gold anyway, make a mad rush to dump paper and buy gold. Very, very few of them will succeed! You see, the largest bulk of the tradable physical gold will never come back into the market, in terms of currency! It will return as a trade for another commodity! OIL!

What do we look for to see the coming end of this present overleveraged economic system? The complete and total destruction of the world gold trading system!
From Another: the destruction of the present currency system will be preceded by the total unlinking of all gold for currency trading gold may find a price of $50US/oz or $50,000us/oz, but the truth will not be known as an open market yet gold will find an increase of value of biblical proportions

Thank You

Global Intelligence Update
Intense Diplomacy in Wake of Iraqi Crisis

As the Iraqi crisis winds down, there is intense diplomatic activity
underway throughout the region. A high-level Iranian delegation is
continuing its visit to Saudi Arabia, while Turkish officials visit
Damascus and the Greek Foreign Minister has met with Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak and other Egyptian officials. Each meeting has focused on
the state of the world after UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's compromise
permitted the United States to end its direct confrontation with Iraq. At
issue: the geopolitics of the Middle East.

The Iranian-Saudi talks took some strange twists during the past 24 hours.
At first, it was expected that former President Rasfanjani would remain for
ten days while Iran's oil minister would remain until Tuesday, carrying out
a pilgrimage to Mecca on Wednesday. Then it was reported that the oil
minister would be leaving a day early, and that a communique would be
released on Monday. No communique was released, but stories appeared in
Iranian newspapers on Tuesday, revealing that Saudi Arabia had attempted to
blackmail Iran at OPEC negotiations in November, 1997, by threatening to
take the lid off of its oil production unless the Iranians agreed to higher
quotas for Saudi Arabia. So it appeared that the talks had broken down in
a rather nasty way. Then it was revealed that the talks hadn't broken down
but were continuing, although it was not clear how long the talks would
last or who was participating on the Iranian side.

Now, all of this could have been merely a case of poor public relations
coordination. But it appears to us that the news reveals extremely
important and tense negotiations underway. Two issues have intersected.
Iran wants to reverse the results of the Iran-Iraq War, recover lost
territory, and become the preeminent power in the Persian Gulf. The Saudis
are less than enthusiastic about the prospect, to say the least, but badly
want Iranian cooperation in attempts to stabilize global oil prices. The
Iranians have mixed feelings on this, since there are geopolitical
advantages to them in having the Gulf States economically weakened. So
each wants something from the other and the United States is no longer a
factor in their consideration.

Underlying this is a geopolitical nightmare for Saudi Arabia. The Middle
East is now divided between a Turkish-Israeli bloc and a Greek-Syrian-Iraqi
bloc. Immediately after Annan's agreement was announced, the Turkish
foreign minister went to Damascus, clearly trying to leverage Syria out of
the alliance--an unlikely prospect. Then the Greek foreign minister
traveled to Cairo on a more plausible mission--recruiting Egypt into the
alliance. Greece would welcome Egyptian support on the Cyprus issue. More
important, Egypt could increase the military vulnerability of Israel,
thereby increasing Turkey's isolation. Egypt, furious with Israel,
irritated at the United States, and vulnerable to Islamic fundamentalists,
might see such a relationship as potentially attractive.

This would be disastrous for the Saudis, who would then be exposed to
internal unrest due to economic stress and religious and tribal dissent,
and to external pressure from an emboldened Iraq. Since no one can be sure
how Egyptian policy will evolve in the coming months, the Saudis are
confronted with some extremely unpalatable choices, one of which involves
cutting a deal with the Iranians.

A number of things are clear. First, the regional credibility of the
United States is at an all-time low. No one really even knows what the
U.S. wants or what they might want the U.S. to do. With the U.S. no longer
containing conflicts in the region, we expect the Greco-Turkish
confrontation over Cyprus to intensify and even spread. This is a good
time for the Greeks to press their case against Turkey, with Turkey's main
patron unlikely to flex its muscles again very soon. We expect the
Iranians to have enough leverage with the Saudis to emerge with some sort
of deal involving strategic cooperation and parallel policies on oil
prices.

Oddly, the Iranians are among the big winners in this crisis. They have
become the wild card in the region, courted by everyone, owned by no one.
Iran is now busily spinning its own web, trying to replace the United
States as Saudi Arabia's guarantor. Washington, having conspired with
Tehran, is now discovering the price of failed conspiracy. It has
emboldened and enabled Iran. Now that the United States has managed to
simultaneously baffle and terrify everyone in the region, the Iranians have
become the thoughtful and moderate alternative. That is an incredible
achievement on the part of the United States and will be a legacy
dominating the region in the coming months.

Paper currencies came to represent Gold, then lost that and now Gold has become a means to make more paper money. Talk about putting the cart before the horse! "on the other hand we're looking at Deflationary pressure from Asia"
US Bonds were down almost a full point today, I would look for the US$

Bankers, etc are all publicly "begging" for this IMF funding, the votes
must be very close indeed, ...I don't believe the markets have
taken a NO IMF funds into account...Look Out Below....As I suggested
in my last post, Gold would have faired much better with a US attack,
but even with this Iraq "deal" the US has been exposed as weak
diplomatically in the Region ( Oil ) and the World ( US$ ) ......
News from the ME, as I also suggested, Iran and Saudi will
now work together to halt the Price of Oil decline and are
threatening to "get tough" with OPEC cheaters....Also heard that

I will answer as seen, as time is short.
Neophyte, Lending slowed the end of last year. Some sales still ongoing. CBs wanted gold to stop in the low $300s as that priced $12 to $15 oil. The paper market is now out of control. The BIS will step in at below $280. They have currency as trees in the forest without limit. But, the gulf problem may change things. This is ongoing?

ANOTHER, or Speaker for ANOTHER: I wish to add my concerns to that of sharefin. You know there are many on this site who are concerned about the future of 'fiat' currencies. We know from history what is likely to enfold for all 'fiat' currencies - in time. The SEAsian crisis for example, does not necessarily lead into a World crisis this year or even the next. Perhaps the year 2000 bug will be the trigger.
What I would like to know is I think what we all would like to know -- namely what you predict will happen. For example, in all crises I have reviewed in the past, there was solid evidence of a crisis -- the US dollar in 1987, the British pound stering in 1932 ( approx ) , etc. Can you tell us anything? Will you tell us that some key CB's have been using 'paper scrip' to represent their gold in the gold loan markets, but there is no gold in the bank in question? Whatever your concern is must be a serious matter indeed if you think 2/3 of the bullion price is 'paper' and only 1/3 physical gold -- but the world renowned gold expert Frank Veneroso thinks only 1/4 of the spot bullion price is due to 'paper'. Where is F. Veneroso's mistake?
We are very interested in what you have to say -- but we need more than the dire warnings you have always given us. Surely you realize that few of us are wealthy enough to put most of our assets in gold bullion. Many of us are trying to make money so that our assets will be of value in permitting a recovery from a financial crisis yet to come.

Greenspan lied today because if he told the truth nobody would understand anyway. Asia is in a depression. Japan, dead meat, however they are the worlds largest creditor.

Europe, pigs would not put up with the financial stye, is that how you spell that in Australia?!, Africa is the continent forgotten and if the world had a soul it would speak of and more properly address the problems there.

The Middle East is a cauldron of hope, fear and stupidity, God, or at the very least their God wreaks havoc on the living. The chosen eat well and the people suffer. The Jew lives alone supposedly, not, screw the bible, we have the latest technology to kill everybody, we have no UN hats, whats changed? I think nothing, how true, back in Asia, off shore,

Whats next folks. The Japanese dump their US debt paper, South America being the fine Juntas ( spelling ) they are go up in smoke following their idiot bastard chiefs to the north.

Central America, and so, yeah what a power, and Blanchard and Davidson want to sell condos in New Zealand, I love people of conviction, at least a rattle snake has the decency to strike once.

So all the worlds pundits speak, currency, not as in grapes, but rather the pieces of paper that men and women hand to each other which mean nothing more than their words end up being meaningless.

I do not think for one minute that ANOTHER is God.
He is no different than any of us here.
He obviously has a vision-story to tell
Just like the rest of us.

What I find interesting is the path that his vision travels down.
I am interested in what *else* ANOTHER sees coming.

All of us look to the future but few have a clue what lies ahead.
Many here on this forum get caught out 100% at times,
Trying to predict what will happen next week.

I am prepared to listen, learn and read from all on this forum.
And after that I will throw out the garbage.
And keep that to which I prescribe some truth to.

There is always an essence of truth,
In someone else's story,
From which I can learn.

Yes, where is Mike when you need him! Only joking Mike.

Sometimes this group is like a bunch of caged hungry dogs - we all know what we want, when we don't get it instantly, we take it out on each other! Snarling, growling, biting and sometimes just vicious. When we get a little meat, we all wag our tail and jump up and down until the meat is digested and we become hungry again. Arf. Arf.

The phenonmenon that ANOTHER talks about is not unique to gold. Look at the current M3 growth vs actual PPI data. There is a general decoupling between the financial and physical worlds. US M3 does not even scratch the surface when you consider the unregulated Eurodollar market or the even wilder derivatives scene.

The question is whether "anyone cares". The only time there will be "problems" is where the financial pollyana world impacts the physical world. Curiously, one place this is happening most dramatically is in the world of gold where paper is used to destroy the price of the physical.

Another way of looking at this is that the US dollar is being driven balistic by the financial hyperinflation that is happening and is starting to blow apart the "American Economic Empire". "Noone" can afford to buy assets priced in US dollars outside of the US.

Theorectially this phenonmena could go on for years except for the singular fact that the lifeblood of the current economy - oil - is priced in those increasingly very expensive dollars. So all of a sudden you start to see talk of the Euro, the Yen or Singapore dollar based asian currency block and, of course, the gold dinar.

Curiously the price of gold bullion is probably irrelevant to the process that is unfolding here. What IS relevant is that it is a universally accepted financial asset without a "political history" ( like the Yen would be to those ex members of the Japanese empire of the 30's ) . The world has to find an alternative to the US dollar as it spins out of control in its own pollyanna world.

JTF That was well spoken and i must agree with you that many...........
of us are serious about the ponzi games being played in order to cover up the meltdown on the horizon. I recently met with an 85 year old gentleman who has a net worth in excess of forty million dollars. I asked this gentleman for some investment advice and this is what he told me. "A WEALTHY MAN IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND WILL BE A MAN WITH NO DEBT." He went on to explain that his father spent his life waiting for the next depression and died without ever seeing it. Although he does not feel he will see the next one he is of the opinion that it is near. In his parting words to me he stated; " BY THE WAY SON DONOT BE AFRAID TO STOCKPILE SOME GOLD IN CASE I AM WRONG." I have since learned that this wise old man has tucked away $10,000,000 in gold bullion, gold stocks and gold funds and it is his holdings in gold that allows him to sleep at night. You see when you are worth millions the fear of loss is much greater than when you are worth $100,000.00! There is much wisdom in his words! By the way, he made his money in real estate.

I am increasingly stunned by the shear stridency we see on the part of our "diplomats". I suppose it is due to our singular position as a superpower but a little humility could go a long way. What would it hurt to be a humble giant.

I am talking about their statements that we will go into Iraq regardless of China, Russia, and France. Regardless of most other "allies" non-support. Are we going to enforce UN resolutions based on our national interests?

Now I am watching the dynamic duo pitch to congress the widening of NATO. They appear maniacal in their arguement. Why do they want this so bad? Why forge new alliances for mutual protection when most current NATO members would not support our recent Iraq adventure? Makes me think the trilateral, Bildeberg, CFR arguements may have more reality than I gave them credit for.

There is definately a disconnect between the stated reasons for Iraq intervention and Nato enlargement and the current geopolitical situation. We are being fed insecurity where the world seems relatively secure. Why?

it is easy for one to speak of "no debt" with his wealth. I am certain that with his multiple real estat holding he had plenty of debt so that he could leverage on the rising prices of real estate. I know from personal experience. He now sits atop a fortune and provides us with insight while for many hears he utilized the paper world. I'm curious as to how much of his portfolio was invested in PMs in 1980.

I certainly appreciate the advice BUT I also talked with many people of wealth and they are quick to offer advice that they themselves were not willing to undertake. ( like a broker recommending a security that they don't have in their portfolio..... hmmmmmmm )

BTW: the days of real estate millionaires will not be in our lifetimes.

Amazing Grace, how sweet Thou are...

I once was lost but now I'm found
Was blind but now I can see...

Well I once believed the Dow would fall..
I once believed there would be...
A Day of Reckoning in the U.S. dollar...
A financial catastrophe

For years I've believed in gold and silver...
Shunned paper made from a tree
I always felt precious metals would climb
And make me rich as a king..

And now I know deep in my heart
PM's aren't what they're cracked up to be
You can make so much more in the Standard & Poor
So I've gone long on the Dow, you see.

Amazing Grace, how sweet thou are
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I'm found
Was blind but now I can see.

The Hatt: Appreciate your post. I agree -- those who have already made their fortune are the ones least likely to risk it -- hence the large purchases of gold bullion insurance. Those who have little money have much less to risk - and need less insurance.
And if we are right that all the world's financial systems will not go up in flames in an instant -- risking assets in gold stocks don't seem all that risky to me. That 3x multiplier over gold bullion prices is tempting indeed.

I to have lived through times when leveraging made sense however from a basic lifestyle perspective would it not make sense to be DEBT-FREE! Futhermore can you honestly say that you have at any point in your adult life been at the point where no-one could ever say to you "YOU OWE ME". Am not trying to argue this point as i have not reached that point yet but I can tell you that the closer I get the better I sleep! The idea that Americans are using their credit cards to invest, tells me the time is near when more people will wish that they had not been so foolish. Greenspan actually eluded to it today in his speech! He stated that in 12 to 18 months many would look back and regret having risked their capital in the markets!
